An Introduction to Tribal India

The word "tribal" or Adivasi often brings to our mind a picture of half-naked men and women, arrows and spears in their hands, feathers in their heads, and unintelligible language, combined with myths of savagery and cannibalism. However, societal knowledge of tribals is very limited, leading us to believe many myths at the cost of their dignity. The castigation of tribals by both the Indian government and Indian society continues, though there are approximately 100 million persons enumerated in India as members of Scheduled Tribes, comprising of about 10%-15% of India’s population.
